Playing only one sport can have its issues. It can become worse in the future when kids are solely committed to one sport.
Lately, we've had discussions with parents and their sporty kids talking about what they need to improve on to help them make them become better athletes.
When we ask the parents and kids, 'Where in their weekly training schedule are you addressing (the area they want to improve)?' It's filled up with team-based, school-sport, or private coaching to develop the skills and tactics for their sport (Still good). And stories of kids being burnt out from their sport are REAL! Too much training and not enough overall physical development.
Yet the funny thing is, by only introducing 2x 1-hour strength training sessions a week, their sports training would be more effective, probably could train less, and would become more enjoyable!
By focusing on getting stronger, more powerful, and moving better in a general context, they're able to better express their skills at a higher level, far beyond just sports coaching alone can bring.
We've been saying this for years. if kids want to be better in their sport, they need to include strength training into their weekly routine.
