There are many elements that need to be considered when we're trying to improve endurance/conditioning in youth athletes.
In this article, we are going to look at 4 reasons why endurance training for young athletes is overrated, specifically looking at team-based sports.
1. Poor Running Technique
Poor running technique wastes lots of energy, thus speeding up time to fatigue. Improving running technique will carry over to improving endurance as less energy is exerted.
2. Sports Coaches Have Little Experience Developing Endurance In their Athletes
Most of the time, many coaches overprescribe conditioning sets on top of their normal sessions without any forethought about how it may impact the youth athletes later down the track.
3. Training Sessions Will Have Some Conditioning Already In-built
Drills and small-sided games will provide enough of a stimulus to improve young athletes conditioning already.
4. Getting Young Athletes Stronger Is a Low Priority
Getting youth athletes stronger will better express their endurance, recovery, and also their repeat-sprint ability crucial for team-bases sports.
