For all sport coaches, parents and youth athletes...a timely reminder as sport training begins to make it's triumphant return post lockdown.
If your young sporting athletes have NOT been keeping up with their fitness during lockdown, then this is a nice reminder before you slam them with shuttle runs and push ups into their sessions...EASE THEM BACK INTO IT!
3 things NOT to do and 3 SOLUTIONS you can do instead:
1. Have long training sessions
- Solution: keep it engaging, short and enough that they are eager for the next training session.
2. Fitness-specific component
- Solution: leave this out. It increases the likelihood of injuries down the track if youth athletes have not been keeping up with their fitness during the lockdown. And, they're developing their fitness during drills anyways.
3. Too much running!
- Solution: focus on running and sprint mechanics/technique.
