Why Does Your Young Athlete Keep Getting Injured? Look Beyond the Pain

September 18, 20263 min read

It’s frustrating watching your child work hard, complete their rehabilitation and return to sport—only for the same pain or injury to come back.

They may have rested, stretched and strengthened the sore area. Yet after a few weeks of training or competition, the familiar knee pain, tight calves, sore back or shoulder discomfort returns.

Sometimes, the painful area isn’t the whole problem. To create lasting improvement, we may need to look at how your child’s entire body moves.

Pain may be the symptom not the cause

Young athletes can develop movement compensation patterns when their body isn’t using the right muscles in the most efficient sequence.

For example, if an athlete isn’t effectively using their hips and glutes to produce movement, other areas may try to do more of the work. Their calves, quadriceps, lower back, shoulders or even jaw can become overloaded.

Treating the painful area may provide short-term relief. However, if the underlying movement pattern remains unchanged, the same area can continue to become tight, tired or sore.

This is why a whole-body movement assessment can be valuable for young athletes experiencing recurring injuries or unexplained performance limitations.

Better movement can support better performance

Efficient movement allows force to travel through the body more effectively. This can help a young athlete run, jump, change direction and perform sporting skills with less unnecessary effort.

When the body shares the workload across the right muscles and joints, your child may be better able to:

  • Produce strength, speed and power

  • Maintain their technique when tired

  • Recover between efforts and training sessions

  • Reduce unnecessary strain on overloaded areas

  • Move with greater confidence

Improving movement efficiency isn’t only about injury prevention. It can also help your child feel more capable and confident in their sport.

Give your child ownership of their development

One of the most valuable things we can give a young athlete is a better understanding of their own body.

Rather than relying on someone to repeatedly “fix” them, athletes can learn to recognise when something doesn’t feel right and use appropriate movement, breathing or activation exercises to prepare themselves for training.

This helps build independence and gives them practical tools they can carry throughout their sporting journey.

What parents can do

If your child keeps experiencing the same problem, consider asking:

  • Are we only treating the sore area?

  • Has their overall movement been assessed?

  • Do they move differently when tired?

  • Are they returning to sport without addressing the original cause?

  • Do they understand how to prepare their body before training?

Recurring pain should always be assessed by an appropriately qualified health professional. However, combining rehabilitation with individualised strength and conditioning can help your child rebuild their movement, physical capacity and confidence.

Help your child move and perform with confidence

At Inner Athlete Performance, we look beyond isolated exercises. Our youth athletic development programs consider how each athlete moves, where they may be compensating and what they need to progress safely.

If your child is dealing with recurring injuries, inefficient movement or a physical limitation affecting their confidence and sporting performance, our three-session Quick Start Trial is the ideal place to begin. We’ll assess how they move, identify their individual strengths and areas for improvement, and develop a personalised plan to support their long-term development.

Book your child's Quick Start Trial today and help them build a stronger, more resilient foundation for their sporting future.
