The Major Benefits of Strength Training for Young Athletes

The benefits of strength/weight/resistance training for youth athletes are major for performance, longevity and injury prevention.

From a performance perspective, the younger youth athletes undertake a structured strength training program, we see improvements in their sporting performance.

Why is that?

Part of the reason is most movements require a minimal level of strength to executive skills.

Being stronger, allows you to practice the skill more often as the athlete won't become as fatigued compared to someone of similar skill. This means they practice higher quality movements/reps more often, further executing and ingraining the skills necessary for their sport.

Another reason is the body is better able to recover between training sessions and competitions. Thus allowing more training to occur in the long-term.

Lastly, we see a reduction in overuse injuries. This is common for many kids and teens that only train for only one sport.

Sports are inherently repetitive in nature and have low variability, which increases the monotony of training. This can lead to burnout and overuse injuries.

General strength training helps to prevent common injuries we see all too often at the junior level of sport in Melbourne.

Strength Training Benefits:

✅  Improved motor control

✅  Ability to executive skills at a higher level and for longer

✅  Reduce the risk of overuse injuries
