How to Help Your Youth Athlete Grow Taller Over Summer

October 07, 20234 min read

As a parent of a budding young athlete, you're likely no stronger the constant changes and surprises that come with raising an active child. Have you ever noticed how your child seems to shot up like a sunflower during the summer months? It's not just your imagination! Summer is a crucial time for growth in children, and there are several key factors at play. In this blog post, we'll explore why kids tend to grow more during the summertime compared to winter, and how you can harness this natural phenomenon to support your youth athlete's development. From the relaxation of school stress to increased sun exposure, we'll unveil the secrets behind those summer growth spurts.

Less Stress, More Growth

The summer break offers a much needed hiatus from the pressures of school. Without the demands of homework, exams, and extracurricular activities, your child's body can focus on growth and recovery. During sleep, growth hormone is released stimulating tissue repair and regeneration. With more restful nights during the summer, your child's body can tap into its full growth potential. Encourage a consistent sleep scheduled, ensuring your youth athlete gets the recommended amount of rest for their age. Additionally, consider incorporating relaxation techniques like mindfulness exercises or yoga to further reduce stress levels.

Basking in the Sun's Benefits

The benefit of sun exposure extend far beyond just Vitamin D production. Sunlight also promotes overall well-being and mental health. It boosts serotonin levels, often referred to as the "feel good" hormone, which can enhance mood and reduce anxiety. This positive mental state creates an optimal environment for growth. However, it's crucial to balance sun exposure with proper sun protection to prevent harmful UV rays. Encourage outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun's rays are less intense, and always apply sunscreen with a high SPF before heading outdoors.

Elevated Food Consumption

During the summer, children tend to have bigger appetites due to increased physical activity levels. This heightened food consumption presents an opportunity to provide nutrient-dense meals that support growth. Focus on incorporating foods rich in calcium, such as dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified cereals to ensure strong bone development. Lean proteins like poultry, fish and legumes supply the essential amino acids needed for muscle growth and repair. Additionally, offer a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables to provide a spectrum of vitamins and minerals crucial for overall health and development.

Hydration is equally important, especially during the warmer months. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water to maintain optimal hydration levels, which aids in digestion, circulation and nutrient absorption.

Encourage Active Play and Exercise

The summer break provides ample opportunities for your child to engage in physical activities they enjoy. Encourage them to participate in sports, go for bike rides or simply play games that involve running and jumping. Regular exercise stimulates the release of growth hormone and enhances muscle development. Additionally, it improves coordination and balance, setting the foundation for athletic success. Consider enrolling your child in a summer sports camp or community league to further cultivate their skills and passion for their chosen sport.

I'm sure many of you parents have seen this same thing happen, whether it be with your own child or your nieces and nephews. They go away on a summer holiday for a couple weeks and all of a sudden they are a foot taller. The relaxation, sun, and increased sleep play a huge role in allowing them to grow. We've seen this first hand with out athletes after they go away during the summer break and come back a completely different athlete. They return home with more muscle mass, lose the baby fat and are way more coordinated than they were before. That's why it's super important to be strength training from an early age, so when your growth spurt does come around, you already have a strong base to work from.

As a parent of a youth athlete, you play a pivotal role in nurturing their potential for growth and success. Embrace the natural rhythm of summer, allowing your child to unwind, explore and thrive. By understanding the factors that contribute to summer growth spurts, you can create an environment that maximises their developmental potential. From reducing stress to increasing sun exposure and optimising nutrition, you hold the keys to a summer filled with growth, both on and off the field. So, let the sunshine in and watch your young athlete blossom before your eyes. Here's to a season of incredible growth and achievement!
